Description:
The “new” neighborhood of East Village is actually a very old Eastern European community whose predominant architectural style is the small cottage, as well as two- and three-flats. Like much of the area, urban pioneers and entrepreneurs has rediscovered it, attracted by lower real estate prices and accessibility to the Loop (10 minutes) and expressways.
Another traditional neighborhood undergoing change is Ukranian Village, which is still home to many first-, second- and third-generation Eastern Europeans. Ornate orthodox cathedrals with colorful domes, shop signs in Russian and English and colorful flower boxes are familiar sights throughout this immaculate neighborhood of brick two- and three-flats and bungalows.
Nearby Wicker Park is enjoying an unprecedented spurt of new construction and renovation. The neighborhood boasts some of the most magnificent residences in Chicago. With dozens of restaurants and art galleries and its own rapid transit stop providing easy access to both the Loop and O’Hare, it’s no wonder Wicker Park is burgeoning.
Closer to the city is River West, near the Chicago River and the River North gallery district. The area offers dozens of new office and residential loft conversions, a smattering of renovated two- and three-flats and some newly constructed townhomes. Here, traditional family-owned restaurants, bakeries and flower and produce stands are being rediscovered by a new generation of city-dwellers. |
